Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints for their first Superbowl win, and to all of the new fans and long time supporters. I grew up in this city and always dreamed of the celebration that would take place if our Saints ever won the Superbowl. Last Sunday night, I got to witness it firsthand and it was better than I ever imagined.

A few great things that happened as a result of this win:

1. The Saints proved that they were the best team in the NFL this year, proving all the naysayers wrong at last.

2. The Saints gave the people of New Orleans hope that yes, it CAN happen to us.

3. The Saints Football Team provided the most positive press to the city of New Orleans and State of Louisiana that we could have ever asked for, and in doing so put an exclamation point on the recovery of our city and left a lasting impression in the minds of all viewers.

If you look at the backlinks for the URL, it’s nothing but link directories and such. Lucky guy. Bing needs to work on their canonical URL issues here.
A long time ago, I remembered that I forget a lot, so I started making lists.

I realized that I had plenty of great ideas to market my business, but if I forgot them, it could be like losing the winning lottery ticket. How dumb would that be?

The thing that’s really sad about it is the fact that probably 99% of my best internet marketing ideas come to me at a time when I’m completely unable to act on them, and the ones that I can act on right away, usually wind up costing me a lot of money because I don’t let them hibernate on a list for a short while!

How could such a simple, intuitive task escape me for so long?

So I started making internet marketing to-do lists, and to-date, I have 3 running to-do lists (general, blogging topics [this wasn't one btw], and press release topics). I keep them on my PDA phone, so that wherever I am, there they are. Now, I never forget my good ideas, and I actually get most of them done. I can’t begin to tell you how much this has increased how productive I am. I rarely sit at the computer board, trying to think of something to do when I feel like working. Nowadays I just check my to-do list.

The other good thing about the internet marketing to-do list, is that it makes things easier to prioritize. Instead of starting and stopping different tasks I know I should be working on, I just look at the list, and it’s usually pretty obvious what I should be working on.

In the past, if you tried to contact MySpace about advertising, you’d be lucky to get a response. Then if you did, you probably wouldn’t be considered unless you spent $10k / month or more. Well that’s all changed with MySpace’s introduction of “MyAds Beta.”

I recently tried out MyAds by running some banners to promote my forums, and here are the results.

The Positive:

The interface is very easy to use. Just about anyone should be able to easily upload a banner ad and choose the demographic they wish to target. It’s straightforward and intuitive.

If you’re serious about marketing your website, you probably already have banners made, but MyAds Beta has a really neat tool called “build an ad” that will let you choose an appropriate background image for your banner and write the text that you want it to say. Just like the rest of the interface, it’s simple to use, and even the most novice internet marketers should be able to start up ad campaigns using this.

Great targeting options. MyAds let’s you choose who will see your ads based on:

Gender
Age
Education
Relationship
Parental Status
And Geotargeting options like: US, Region, State, City, and Zip Code

Interest targeting is the biggie here. One of the unique things about social media marketing is the fact that these social media sites have so much data about people’s hobbies and interests. This is where these ads excel at reaching niche markets. MyAds allows you to choose who to show ads to based on many different levels of interests like: health, automobiles, fashion, movies, music, poker, etc.

Invalid Click Filtering, The Negative

The test campaign I ran went great except for one glaring downside: invalid clicks. Google is probably one of the best companies at filtering invalid clicks, and that’s why Google Analytics is such a great tool for measuring traffic. Because of this, I track all of my advertising closely in Google analytics by tagging the URL’s for each ad of each campaign I run.

The problem I encountered was that MyAds was showing about 60% more traffic (clicks) than what I was seeing in Google Analytics. The real traffic I got from MyAds was good – I had good pageview numbers per visitor, and good percentages of user registrations on the forums. In fact, if I wasn’t paying for so many invalid clicks, the traffic was as good as some well targeted Adwords campaigns I’ve run. But due to the invalid clicks, the cpc I really paid was almost double what I had bid.

I emailed MyAds about the issue and got a canned response that basically defended their ad filtering software. I’ve run similar ads in other places including Facebook, and never seen this big of a discrepancy, so I know they have a problem. Hopefully they will get it fixed soon. When they do, MyAds will be a great platform for social media marketing.

Well, maybe not masses. Not now at least :)

Over the past few days, we launched a new site that I am very excited about. This is a project that I’ve been wanting to do for years, and once I got the ball rolling, like with my first real blog, I had this nagging realization that:

It was something I should have started long ago.

There is no doubt that it will be successful.

That it has tremendous profit potential.

My interest in dedicated severs and the market began back in the Fall of 2007 when I was looking for suggestions for a new hosting company. If you follow my blog, you know I did my homework and ended up with my current dedicated server at LiquidWeb.

Since that time, the topic of servers has become of great interest to me, and I noticed that it was a niche not often written about in the blogosphere, but there are plenty of people out there looking for information. There are also plenty of dedicated server companies out there trying to reach these people.

This is where Dedicated Sever School fills its niche and accomplishes its task. The goal of the dedicated server school blog is to create a library of blog posts and information for the public on web server FAQ’s and solutions, while at the same time referring visitors to the dedicated server company best suited for their needs. We have a professional staff writer with experience in the industry, and brand new partnerships with the best and brightest server providers in the industry. Over the next few months we will be networking with other bloggers, to create a well known oasis for server information. So if you are someone who has an interest in the industry or a related blog, let us know! We should connect!

If you’re a small business who can’t afford to have a professional PPC management company run your Adwords campaign, then use this simple guide to get started on the do-it-yourself plan:

First and foremost, make sure you can track conversions so you know how your Adwords campaign is performing. Start by getting a cheap 1-800 number from Kall8.com and forward it to your regular number. Replace your phone number on your website or Adwords landing pages with this one so you can check your call detail to see which calls came from your Adwords campaign.

Then make sure you set up conversion tracking in Adwords, this usually only requires putting a small bit of code on your “thank you” page.

It also helps to have Google Analytics installed on your website, with “Goals” setup properly. With “goals” in Google Analytics, you can easily track conversions whether it be a lead submitted through a contact form or purchase through an online shopping cart, and Analytics allows you to see quite a bit of information about the different types of traffic your website receives, much more than what you will get form the Adwords interface.

Second, make sure that your site is conversion-friendly. Internet users have short attention spans, and some may not visit more than one page of your website. Since you are spending your hard-earned money to get these people to your site, it’s of utmost importance that you can turn a visitor into a conversion on that first page.

This may mean setting up landing pages that are targeted for each type of ad you’re running in Google. For shopping carts, the ads should send the visitor to the specific product page or category that they are targeting. For lead generation sites, the ads should send the visitor to a page that deals specifically with the ad and keywords you’re targeting. Most importantly, web pages should have your 1-800 number displayed prominently on the website, and if it’s a lead generation site, there should be a contact form on every page.

Next, create specific ads that match up with the keywords you’re targeting. For example, if your company sells red, white, and blue widgets, make a separate ad group for each type of widget. You can always test out a general “widgets” ad group, but your success will more likely come from specific keywords targeted to highly relevant searches, that send the user to a highly relevant landing page. This also helps out your Adwords “quality score” and reduces click prices.

So the ad above should target “blue widgets” keywords and send visitors to the best possible landing page for “blue widgets” on your website.

Last but not least, use different match types of each keyword to help find what converts best for you. Google has 3 different match types: broad, “phrase,” and [exact]. In order to use different match types you will have to add your keywords, once by themselves (ex. blue widgets), once in parenthesis (ex. “blue widgets”), and once in brackets (ex. [blue widgets]). This controls which searches Google will show your ad for.

By using [exact match] your ad will get shown only to people who type in the exact keywords as you have them in the brackets. This usually brings in the least amount of traffic, but can be some of the most well-targeted keywords in a campaign.

By using “phrase match” your ad will get shown when someone types in the keywords you specified, in that order, but with other keywords in the search as well. For example, the phrase match “blue widgets” can trigger your ad when someone types in Google “buy blue widgets,” or “sell blue widgets.” The fact that you will get unintended searches triggering your ads can be good and bad. Good because some will bring in conversions, and bad because some will cost you money and not convert. You can run a “search query report” or set an Analytics filter to show you what searches are resulting in your ad being clicked. This will help you to exclude certain searches by adding “negative keywords” into your Adwords campaign.

By using broad match you really put your faith in Google by letting Google pick which keywords to trigger your ad for. My experience has been that a broad matched “blue widgets” keyword (without the quotes of course), can trigger your blue widgets ad for searches like “red widgets,” “widgets that are blue,” “buy widgets,” and even searches that have synonyms or related words that aren’t your actual keyword. This can be a double-edged sword. Broad matched keywords can bring in the most traffic. They can also help you find new keywords you hadn’t thought of before that convert well for you. But the downside is that they can wind up costing you a lot of money if you’re showing up for keyword phrases that aren’t relevant enough to produce conversions on your website.

If you’re learning to run your own Adwords campaign for the first time, be prepared to encounter success and failure. Make sure to read plenty of information on the subject, and be open to trying what experienced professionals suggest. If this is all too much information to take in, and you want to focus your efforts on managing your business – look into hiring a professional pay-per-click management company like Reciprocal Consulting (the one I work for).

In the past I’ve done a few posts about PageRank that may help newcomers understand the difference between “actual” PageRank and “Toolbar” PageRank, along with some of the anomalies you will see if you look at the Google Toolbar for a long time (no, not visions of Mary either, just the little green bar).

One of the things I discussed in my post “Anomalies with Google’s ‘Toolbar PageRank,’” was the fact the sometimes search results will look strange when there is a site with low “toolbar PageRank” ranking high for competitive keywords. This is sometimes due to the possibility that Google has penalized the website’s “toolbar” PR for selling links.

This appears to be what happened to Blog Catalog today. Blog Catalog used to have a PR 6 or 7 homepage, and many interior category pages that were PR5, but if you check today, you will see that they’ve been bumped down to a PR4. Is Blog Catalog really selling links? You be the judge – have a look at the top right of the “Health” section page (click here).

Will this affect BlogCatalog’s search engine rankings? Probably not.

Although it has been argued both ways, I am of the opinion that it WILL affect the “link juice” that gets passed down to all of the blogs listed in their directory.

WebhostingTalk.com members vote LiquidWeb, Best Managed Dedicated Server Company (see poll)

If you’ve ever spent any time researching web hosting, at some point you probably ended up on WebHostingTalk.com, one of the largest forums on the web for hosting related discussions. If you venture there at any point in time during a weekday you might find 1500 or so users online reading and posting to the forums. The dedicated server forum in particular, can provide a wealth of knowledge due to the fact that many industry experts routinely answer questions there for newcomers.

It’s been over a year now since I signed up with LiquidWeb for a managed, dedicated server, and I knew it was a great service for me, but since I frequently recommend them to others I wanted to get a feel for what the web hosting community thought as well. Because who knows? Times change and so do companies. I decided to take a poll of WebHostingTalk.com members in the dedicate forum area to see who today’s leader is. Click below to see the poll results:

Best Managed Dedicated Server Companies: Poll

At the point I last looked at it, LiquidWeb was clearly in the lead, even ahead of well-known industry giant Rackspace. In fact, the only company that was even approaching their votes was a company called Softlayer that was put in the poll by mistake (they don’t offer managed dedicated services).

The poll requirements asked that people who vote had used the company for at least 3 months prior to voting, so if they are accurate, I think this serves as a good customer approval rating for LiquidWeb. The only thing I don’t like about these polls are that they are un-scientific – limited in generalizeability due to the fact that the forum software’s polling features are so limited. Another thing to consider is the fact that few so-called “experts” out there would actually use managed services. The real hosting gurus manage their own server if they have the time.

I’ve long known about email marketing and Aweber’s Autoresponders, but until recently, I didn’t have any ideas on how I could integrate one into any of my own personal websites to make them more profitable for me.

Email newsletters are great for reminding customers and potential customers about your products and services. If the newsletters give something away – like high quality free information, discounts on products, or news about something the consumer cares about, they will generally stay subscribed. And when they keep getting that reminder from you, they’re a lot more likely to turn to you when it comes time for them to make another purchase. They also do great at generating conversions from potential customers who were reluctant to buy when they first found your website.

The bottom line is this: we all need to make the most of our advertising dollars, and email marketing is another way of delivering our content and bringing people back to the website. So whether it’s pay-per-click marketing that sends your traffic or television ads, if you have an email marketing campaign in place you will be more likely to convert the traffic you get from those sources.

The beauty of an email autoresponder is that it’s a set-it-and-forget-it solution to email marketing. The difference between this and a traditional email newsletter is that the more traditional email newsletter requires someone to manage it by coming up with new content on a regular basis and sending the newsletter out.

With an “autoresponder” like the one Aweber has created, the management of the list is automated, so that all of your content can be added at once and sent out through a set interval that you control through the backend. Another great advantage is that through Aweber, you still have the ability to send out a “Broadcast” message to all of your subscribers at once. So if your e-commerce store is trying to “clear out” some old inventory, you can send out the clearance sale newsletter with ease.

One important lesson I’ve learned in generating profit through internet marketing is that creating automated sources of income is key to long term financial success. When I used to make all of my money designing websites for people, I really enjoyed the work, and the money was great, but there was a limiting factor involved that I could never escape from in that line of business: you can only design so many websites, and as soon as the work runs out, the money runs out.

That’s where the true beauty of having an automated newsletter comes in – once the initial work is done, it’s more of a set-it-and-forget-it marketing tool that will generate income for you down the road. For more info, visit Aweber.com.

I’m posting this because I Googled it to death this past weekend trying to find the code for it, and it was nowhere to be found. I’m positive I’ve used it before in the past too, but the code was not in any of my old projects either. After hours of googling for what I knew was a simple mod rewrite for .htaccess, I submitted to defeat and asked (more like begged) an expert on the subject. Here was the problem:

301 Redirect every URL from www.domain1.com to the coresponding URL (keeping the trailing file path intact) on www.domain2.com, when both domains are being pulled from the same directory on the same server, and respecting URL canonicalization issues (www vs. non-www).

This should be a readily available mod rewrite written about on SEO blogs worldwide right? Wrong.

I offered to pay my expert for the consult, but he refused, probably laughing at the trivial request I submitted. So here it is – hopefully good ole Google will pick up this post so the next guy coming along will find this, no problem:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
#
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.domain2\.com$
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.domain2.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Cut, paste into .htaccess file, use notepad, must have Apache server with mod rewrite enabled, works like a charm :) It worked the first time in fact, not like when I do a mod_rewrite and have to test it out 20 times to get it right!

I wrote this because I was explaining PageRank to someone today, and I realized that my first post on PageRank didn’t do a good enough job of explaining some of the strange things you will see from time-to-time. I also added it into that post.

Anomalies with “Toolbar PageRank”
Another important aspect aspect to consider is that there are a few anomalies associated with the PageRank scale as it’s shown on the Google Toolbar. One is the fact that it’s only updated every quarter, and sometimes less often than that. Because of that, sites that are new, may take a while to get “Toolbar PageRank.” I’ve also seen a lot of cases where the initial toolbar PageRank was higher than what they ended up having in subsequent updates.

Another anomaly is the fact that the scale seems to change over time. If you think about it, it makes sense because the internet is constantly growing while the scale remains a number 1 – 10. That being said, it should follow that websites who were at one point a PR5, that don’t build links over time, will see a decrease in their PageRank as it’s displayed by the toolbar over time. This is something I’ve seen on older websites I own. I used to be able to get a PR5 from the toolbar with just a few hundred average links, whereas these days it takes significantly more link building effort to achieve the same toolbar PageRank. The “kicker” is that these “toolbar PageRank” changes may not be associated with loss in rankings at all.

It’s because of the concept of internet growth mentioned above, and penalties that I will discuss next, that I’ve often seen a website’s search rankings go up, even though their toolbar PageRank went down!

The last anomaly I should address about the toolbar is that occasionally you will find websites whose toolbar PageRank has been penalized. It’s something that is most often noticed when you’re looking at competitive search results, and you find it strange that the top results are all well-optimized web pages, yet one on top has a significantly lower PageRank than those beneath. While this can usually be attributed to on-page SEO factors, sometimes it’s because Google actually penalized the toolbar PageRank of the site because it was selling links at one point in time. The strange thing about these types of toolbar PageRank penalties is that they seem to only affect the toolbar and not the website’s actual search engine rankings. This would indicate that “actual PageRank” has not been affected. Sometimes these penalized websites can get their “toolbar PageRank” back through appeal, but that’s not always the case.

As you can see based on these anomalies, there are quite a few reasons that the toolbar may not be indicative of how a website ranks in the search engines.

I’ve been seeing some ads around for therapysites.com for a little while now, and I thought it seemed like a great idea for therapists who want to have their own website built. They provide a lot of tools that make website creation easy, using their customizable themes and their pre-built content management system.

For a FREE Month, use coupon code “promoFMC”!

If you read my post entitled “How Much Should My Website Cost?” you already know that decent web design can start in the $2k range, and go up over time with different cost factors. The thing I like about TherapySites.com, is that while more expensive than just plain website hosting, you save all of the money that’s usually spent on the initial design process. Plus you get their content management system so you can easily make your own changes to the site.

The other thing I like is that the company seems focused on the business of therapists, which means they will likely be equipped to deal with common problems that therapists face when it comes to web design; usually companies like this improve over time also.

I haven’t tried their sites out yet, and I haven’t heard any feedback on them from my advertisers, but they offer a money-back guarantee, and a free month if you mention that you were referred by The FMC Directory (my other website), so it may be worthwhile to try if you’re in the market for a new site.

About a year ago, I got my first Hilton Honors credit card for my business and started making the most out of the money I spent on advertising by getting rewards points that went towards hotel stays at any Hilton resort. It’s worked out so well for me, that I now use another HHonors card for my personal expenses as well. I try to pay any bills I possibly can with the credit card, and I end up getting at least one free hotel night every month! Since I was never the type of person that was good at saving money for vacations, this has worked out very well for our family.

With the monumental rise in gas prices this past year, credit cards with gas rebate rewards have become increasingly popular. Keep in mind that there are many cash-back reward cards available, and they typically give you 1% – 2% cashback on any purchase. Well for gas, your savings can be much higher. Some of these new gas rebate cards are offering as much as 10% off for an introductory period! The Discover Open Road and BP Visa offer 5% for the life of the card. These are huge savings (0.20 per gallon on $4 / gal. gas) compared to traditional rewards cards. It really makes it worthwhile to get one just for fueling up, especially if you’re someone who drives a lot.

To help make these cards more available to the public, this weekend I launched Gas Rebate Credit Cards.com, a site with the top gas credit cards and my other favorite rewards cards as well. I plan on keeping it updated with the best cards as they become available, so check it out if you’re in the market for a rewards card!

It’s no secret that I’ve been a big fan of LiquidWeb’s dedicated servers since I started using them last year. I got my invoice this month, and read a little further down the email where I was surprised to learn that they now have Zero Latency, Solid State Drives available for their dedicated servers! “What is that?” I first though. I put 2 and 2 together, because I know what latency is (and “0″ is a good number when you’re talking about it), and I know what “solid state” means (usually refers to circuitry as opposed to moving parts), so it became clear that they’re offering these brand new solid state drives (SSD) on their servers. Wow!

What’s the Big Deal?
One of the biggest bottlenecks on a computer is the hard drive. If the PC needs to access your hard drive, it slows things down considerably. This is why having enough RAM can speed things up significantly – with RAM, you eliminate the bottleneck of having to search and rescue data from a spinning hard drive. Well, Solid State Drives work like RAM. It’s like replacing your hard drive with a giant RAM chip :) the data becomes instantly accessible to the processor.

Can you imagine how great this will be for websites? Especially forums like mine. It should make them blazingly fast.

I had to call LiquidWeb to find out more. I talked to one of the sales guys, and he confirmed that “yes, the solid state drives are available for the dedicated servers, and LiquidWeb is currently one of only a few dedicated server providers in the world that have them available.”

So the almighty “RackSpace” doesn’t even have these things yet, and when they do get them, RS customers should be prepared to whip out their pocketbook. LiquidWeb will do the upgrade for $150 / mo. right now, with discounts for volume. Not cheap by any means, but I would imagine that it’s a nice performance boost for database driven sites. While it’s not in my budget right now, I can’t wait to try them out. Hopefully anyone with experience with them will post a review.

Paid blogging services can make it obvious that your buying links if you’re new to using them, or they can make it look like your site is generating buzz and natural links in the blogosphere. The second of which, is the desired outcome when optimizing your site for Google. While many paid blogging services don’t give much control to the media buyer, PayPerPost has many options that can make your posts look more natural to the search engines. Here are some tips for using PayperPost.

Use the PageRank Option
PPP has been pushing their “RealRank” and coming up with lots of excuses to make it seem like RealRank is great. The fact is, that the “RealRank” system is flooded with penalized PR0 blogs that Google knows are selling links. What do you think has a better chance of increasing your rankings, a blog known for selling links or one with decent PageRank that’s still under Google’s radar?

The good news is, that the bloggers are getting smarter about advertising the fact that they do paid posting. The ones who keep their PageRank aren’t linking back to PayPerPost or hosting their banners on their blogs.

Buy a Mixture of Different PageRank Posts
To make your campaigns look more natural to Google, don’t purchase all of your posts on blogs of the same PageRank. Try to mix things up as much as possible by using different campaigns targeting different PR blogs. If buying a lot of posts, spread them out over time also.

Require at Least 200 Words
Google values content, and a post with 200 words of relevant content looks more valuable and less like an ad than a 50 word post with a link to your website. You may have to pay more in order to get the posting opps taken this way, but it pays off in the long run.

Stay Away from Per-Post Disclosure
“This is a sponsored post,” is a dead giveaway to Google and visitors. You can avoid bloggers who disclose on a per-post basis by adding this line to your opportunity description:

**Bloggers, please do not take this opportunity if you disclose on a per-post basis.**

Generally, that works pretty well. Give the blogger a bad rating if they ignore it and disclose your paid post on that individual post.

Categories and Regions
It should go without saying that you should choose the most appropriate category for the blogs you want posts from. If you have trouble getting your opps taken though, you may want to try another campaign using a different category if it’s appropriate.

Another helpful tip is to block out blogs from the free blogging services. While it looks more natural to have a little bit of both, if you allow the free services you will get a majority of blog posts hosted by those services. You can usually get all of your opps taken with blogs hosted on unique domain names if you offer the right amount of money. I usually block out all of the free blogging services. I also add these to the “other” exclusion box: i.ph, bravejournal.com, blogrox.com.

For regions, if you’re promoting an American website, exclude all of the other regions. Most of PPP’s bloggers are from the US, so it’s easy to get your opps taken from US bloggers.

Links (most important!)
Don’t be lazy. Create different anchor text for every single link. While this can be very time consuming, it makes your posts look much more natural. Try to think of ways to write your anchor text so that bloggers can easily fit the wording into the post. Use articles, prepositions, and pronouns around your keywords to make it look more natural, and don’t link them all to the same page on your website. Match up keyword anchor text with content on your pages.

Example:
Keyword You’re Targeting: Blue Widgets
Anchor Text to Use: blue widgets, these blue widgets, some widgets that are blue, I found these widgets, website with blue widgets, check out these blue widgets, page about blue widgets, etc.

Remember the goal is to make the posts look natural, like the blogger likes your page and is recommending it.

Other Important Tips
Don’t use PPP as the sole form of link building for your website. Combine it with many other forms of link building to give your site a more “natural” looking link profile. Spread your posting opportunities over time to make it look like there is regular, ongoing buzz about your site in the blogosphere. PayPerPost can be an extremely effective SEO tool if used with these considerations.

The Downside
The downside to using PPP for SEO is that neither their system, nor the bloggers who write for them are perfect. Sometimes opps get taken by bloggers who don’t meet your PageRank requirements. I flag every one of these and complain about it; hopefully PPP will get the picture and fix this glitch one day. I’ve also had bloggers from regions that are excluded take opps they weren’t supposed to. As far as the bloggers go, sometimes you may get a few who are just bad writers, and there is nothing you can do about that. You also can’t control what the bloggers write, so there is the danger that some careless bloggers will post some misinformation just to get paid for a post. You can use their rating system to avoid poor writers, but that’s not perfect either.

A common question I get is, “Chris, we got a quote from this company for our new website and they want to charge us $XXXXX – is that too much?” “Well, what are they going to do?” I counter. “I don’t know, design our website!”

Simple “Brochure” Type Websites
The fact is, $2,000 can be too much or too little, and so can $20,000. It depends on what the purpose of the website is and what type of functionality you want it to have. The simplest websites to build are like “brochures” or “business cards” on the web. These have static content, meaning that if you want to change anything you need to have web design experience or have your designer make the changes. These types of sites generally go for $1k – $5k, depending on the experience and quality of the designer, and depending on if it will have flash, and how many pages it will have.

Content Management Systems (CMS)
The next upgrade is a site with some form of “content management.” CMS allows the site administrator or anyone else with permission, to login to the site and make changes to content and pages using a simple text editor. Website owners like CMS because it makes them less dependent on their web design company for changes. Changes to content can be made quickly and easily by the site owner or admin.

Types of Content Management Systems can vary considerably. Popular “out of the box” CMS systems these days are Drupal, Joomla, and believe it or not, Wordpress. While the simple brochure site mentioned above can usually get CMS for a small additional charge ($1k-$2k), large corporate sites with CMS can get very expensive, in the “10’s of thousands” price range.

Ecommerce Websites
What about shopping carts? Depending on the amount of customization needed, shopping carts carry a heavier price tag as well. The simple solution, if you just have a few products for sale that won’t change, is to get a Paypal account, and use their built in system for the shopping cart. this can be done with just a few simple website edits, and is the easiest way to sell items online (a reasonable web designer might add in a few Paypal buttons for free with the initial design, or for about an hour’s labor if done after the fact).

Most ecommerce sites will have products with options, that change regularly, or limited inventory, or large numbers of products, all of which lend themselves to being better handled by some form of shopping cart script. Don’t let a web designer try to rebuild the wheel for you. There’s usually no need to program a shopping cart form the ground up, and most web designers don’t have that ability by themselves anyway. There are plenty of shopping cart scripts available that can be installed on a site and modified to match your site’s look and feel. Some popular examples are OS Commerce, Zen Cart, Cube Cart, and others. Modifications are what will drive up the price here. Out of the box, these things are simple to install, but modifications to the code and templates can eat up a lot of time. Expect your custom website / shopping cart combination to run anywhere from $5k – $20k, and make sure the designer or company has experience doing the type of ecommerce site you’re looking for. To save money here, go with a ready made template instead of custom design. For all types of website templates, check out Template Monster, TemplateWorld, and Open Source Templates.

Social Media Websites
Want to start a community? There are a lot of ways to do it these days. Social media is taking the web by storm, and a good place to get your foot in the door is by creating something for a small niche. Probably one of the oldest, popular forms of social media is the online forum. Again, like shopping cart scripts, there are scripts out there for forums as well. These are ready made forums that are relatively simple to install and manage. The three most common that I know of are PHPBB, VBulletin, and Invision Power Board. Similar to customization of shopping cart scripts, customization of bulletin board scripts can run up the price as well. Expect installation and customization of new forums to run anywhere from a few thousand dollars up, depending on how far the customization is taken and how many non-standard features are added. For forums as well, you can keep the price down by using a ready-made template from one of the sources mentioned above.

Believe it or not, there are scripts available for creating websites similar to MySpace, Digg, and Youtube as well. Just do your research on them before you decide on one. I always check out their support forums (if they have them), to see what kind of trouble people are having with the scripts, and to see how quickly their support staff responds. If you hire a company to create a site like this for you, be sure to check their references and past experience. You don’t want to be someone’s “test run” on creating a social media site.

What About Hosting?
Your web designer might offer hosting or some type of maintenance plan, or even some form of marketing at a monthly rate for your website. Make sure that you know exactly what you’re getting for the price you agree to pay. For the simple brochure websites, shared hosting is usually adequate, costing anywhere from $5 – $20 / month. But shared hosting may not be adequate when you move up to an ecommerce or social media site that will have many users interacting with it at the same time. For these types of sites you might need a “Virtual” or “Dedicated Server;” my favorite of which so far, has been LiquidWeb.

The amount of traffic you receive will be proportional to the effectiveness of the marketing you do. Don’t expect a flood of visitors just because you have a great website. It can take a lot of time and money to get decent traffic to your website, and there are a lot of different ways of going about marketing it, but that’s for another post.

So What’s the Total Price?
It depends. Good designers with a lot of experience will charge more. Look at their portfolio and check references. You usually get what you pay for, but it’s also easy to get ripped off if you don’t do due diligence. The advantage to going with the more experienced designer or company, is that they usually know what they are getting into before they give you a contract, and they can easily deal with problems that come up along the way. A less experienced designer is more likely to give you a lowball price, then either not meet your expectations, or have to ask for more money to get the site where you want it. That’s not always the case though.

The price goes up as you add features. So it’s important to consider the purpose of your website, its profitability, and what you can fit in your budget. Things like design quality, flash, ecommerce capability, and interactivity can really drive up the price, but they can also make a huge difference in the effectiveness of your site.

A few years back I decided to start using website monitoring services, and I’m grateful that I did. Since then, I’ve learned a lot about hosting and how good or bad the services I was paying for were. This was part of the progression that led me to get a dedicated server last year, which was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made as a web designer / developer. Website monitoring is also vital if you’re running a search engine marketing campaign.

What do website monitoring services do?
They check your website from different locations around the world during the course of the day to make sure that it is up and functioning. You can usually choose how often you want them to check, and different services have different options. These days I use a company called Alertbot, and I’ve been pretty happy with them so far, but there are plenty of others out there and it’s good to shop around to get the features you want.

Why is monitoring a big deal? Don’t you know when your website is down?

The problem is, I didn’t always know… you just can’t be on your website around the clock. Especially when you have multiple sites.

For search engine marketing campaigns, being unaware of downtime can cost a lot of money and skew conversion data.

Downtime is money. When you have profitable websites, you lose money while they are down, regardless of whether or not you’re running pay-per-click campaigns.

I had no idea how unreliable shared hosting was. Once I started monitoring my sites on the shared accounts, I realized that I was having regular weekly downtime of anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour.

Monitoring services give you information that can be used to diagnose problems through support. When I talk to support about downtime, I now have a record of exactly when it occurred, with the IP of the test site(s), and the length of time it occurred. This information can go a long way in helping to get to the cause of the problem, and it gives credibility to your complaint – especially with shared hosting providers.

I’m glad I started doing this because it’s standard practice for me now. At our firm we always recommend that clients monitor their sites, and set it up ourselves if necessary. If you’re running a search marketing campaign for someone else, how do you know if you had a bad day conversion-wise, or if their site was down for a few critical hours and no one knew about it? Things like that could mean the difference between keeping and losing a good client.

At the time, he showed me a preview of his upcoming book entitled “Katrina Days,” which was a visually stunning look at some of the pitcures he captured following the storm. If you’re the type of person who likes the Time / Life “Year in Pictures” type-books, that highlight the great events of our time through photography, then this is something I think you will like. It’s also for the dedicated New Orleans residents who want something tangible to remember the events surrounding hurricane Katrina by.

I just got word that the book is now available through his website, and I placed an order. That’s what prompted me to write. It’s something I had been eagerly awaiting.
In the Fall of last year, Francis Ford Coppola’s computer and backup hard drive were stolen, and he lost 15 years worth of data, including writing and family photographs. He offered a reward for its return, but he never did get it back.

On a much smaller scale, last month I had a backup hard drive fail, which under normal circumstances should be no big deal. I should be able to buy a new one and just replace it, but the problem was that I had stored some data on it which was not stored anywhere else – so it’s now gone for good. I have the option of spending a few hundred dollars on data recovery to see if it can be recovered, but I haven’t been able to decide if the data is worth the price.

What About Your Websites?
Just 2 weeks ago, there was a terrible fire at The Planet, one of the largest web hosting providers in the world. The fire interrupted thousands of servers, but supposedly no servers or networking equipment was damaged. Let’s suppose there had been damage. Suppose that your web server and its backups at your hosting provider were destroyed. Most people who work on static websites have copies on their local machine that they FTP. But how many websites these days are database driven? Are you backing up your databases? I don’t know many people who do, unfortunately.

Here’s What I Do.

I’ve learned the hard way. I’ve lost too many irreplaceable files over the years. I now have a library of digital pictures of my growing family from the past 5 years on my computer. Losing these files would be a great loss for me. So here’s how I’ve come to handle local data.

The local data is the stuff on my computers in my house. I have to think about things like “what if the house catches fire?” or “what if a computer goes down?”

The computer going down is the easy part.
Have a backup hard drive for each computer. And when a computer gets old and goes into retirement, so does the backup drive. I no longer keep reusing old backup drives because they eventually fail, and the older they get the more likely they are to fail. The other reason is that if you reuse it you might not have enough space to backup two computers with it and have to overwrite some of your older files. (Been there, done that, and regret it) Get a new backup drive, they are relatively cheap these days.

For my wife, who uses her laptop in a lot of different places, I got this neat, portable WD backup drive, that uses USB, and doesn’t require another power source. It’s really amazing, at about the size of a PDA, it stores 320 GB of data! A little pricey, but I was hoping that the convenience factor would encourage her to backup more often…the jury’s still out on that one.

The house catching fire is more of a problem.
(For obvious reasons…but not necessarily because of data loss) Keep all of your most important files on your computers you use daily, and use remote, offsite backup that runs on a daily basis. If your house catches fire you risk losing computers and backup hard drives, including those retired ones described in the paragraph above. Believe it or not, remote offsite backup is actually affordable nowadays. I’m now using a company called “Mozy” (thanks to DazzlinDonna) who offers unlimited storage for offsite remote backup for only $4.95 per month, and I use it on both of my computers.

Don’t “set it and forget it though” with offsite backup or any backup program for that matter. Check all of the settings and options they give you. Make sure that you are comfortable with how they are handling your data, and how it is being stored / updated / or deleted. Yes, many backup programs and services delete old files that are no longer in existence at the backup source. Try a test “file recovery” to see if you can get one of your backed up files. When I first started using Mozy, I found out I wasn’t backing up everything I thought I was. I’m glad I tested it!

Web Hosting Data

What if your web host catches on fire? Or floods? Did you see Cedar Rapids, IA go under water the other day? Apparently New Orleans isn’t the only place susceptible to this type of disaster. Such a disaster could easily destroy a datacenter. Here’s how I handle website backups:

WS_FTP, one of the oldest FTP programs around, is still going strong and has a backup scheduling feature. I have an always_on desktop machine setup specifically for backups and web browsing. With this machine I backup all of my important websites, some weekly, and some nightly, depending on how often files change and who changes them.

As for the databases. I’ve posted about this program before because it was such a blessing; I really like Navicat. With Navicat, I schedule backups of my websites’ MySQL databases weekly and nightly, depending on the frequency of change.

This all gets done on the always_on machine dedicated for backups, and all of those backups get backed up to the remote, offsite Mozy backup as well. I also have backup web hosting, but that’s another topic that I’ll probably talk about more in the future.

Time to Think.

It’s a lot to think about, I know. Is it overboard? No, I don’t think so. There have been too many times I’ve needed to have “backups of backups” in the past. I’m not paranoid, it really happens. Suppose Mozy catches on fire? It could happen. During Hurricane Katrina, a lot of people in the City of New Orleans learned some important lessons about planning and emergencies. You’re never too prepared when it comes to this stuff.

Think of all of the possible scenarios that could happen with your data or connectivity, that could significantly impact your business or personal life. Where’s the weakest link? For business especially, there should be no single point of failure that can leave you inoperative for more than a few minutes or an hour. If so, it’s a serious problem that needs to be addressed.

There’s a lot of ways to get links for most SEO campaigns, but one thing I almost always do is hire some outsourced personnel who contact related websites asking them to link to the site we’re promoting from their “Resource” pages. This can be very time consuming work, that’s why most of the people I’ve met who do this are from India. The value you get for your dollar is very good in India. We pay these link builders anywhere from $5 – $50 for a link, and we get a one-time fee, permanent link from another website. Outsourcing companies, like OutsourcedLinkBuilding.com are getting more and more popular due to the cheap price of labor overseas. Outsourced Link Building dot com in particular, has secured tons of valuable links for me in the past. Granted, there are times when I wind up paying for a few I wish I hadn’t, but the overall service is incredible for the price you pay.

The value you get from one-time fee, permanent links is so great, because when you specify a decent part of your budget for that, the links really build up over time. So does your PageRank, and so do your rankings. I’ve found so many ways to get permanent links these days, that it’s rare that I rent links. To me, renting links (paying a monthly fee) is little different from pay-per-click advertising in that you’re renting your space at the top. Don’t rent! Own!

First let me say, that Google does not recommend changing domain names, and neither do I. My next disclaimer is that I can’t control what Google does (the classic SEO disclaimer that every long-term SEO has had to resort to at some point in time). So if you try this at home and it doesn’t work, it’s not my fault.

The internet marketing firm I work for recently ran into a problem that is likely to happen to anyone who names their firm after the partners – one partner left, and we had to change the name. So “Foreman & Pike Consulting” became “Reciprocal Consulting,” but that was the easy part. We had top search engine rankings in Google for “Internet Marketing Firm” and “Internet Marketing Firms,” which had been two productive keyword phrases. How were we going to change our domain name and retain our search rankings?

I’ve been doing SEO since 1998, so I had a pretty good idea of what needed to be done (301 redirects) without looking anything up, but this was a big deal, and the other guys in the firm were depending on me! I’m the only SEO guy, and I needed to get it right!

What helped things out, was that I had done some research for a consulting job on this very thing not long ago, and I tried to find out what Google’s “official” recommendation was on the matter. Here are a few good snippets that I found:

From Google.com:
If you have recently restructured your site or moved to a new domain, pages that previously performed well may now rank poorly. To avoid this, use 301 redirects (“RedirectPermanent”) in your .htaccess file to smartly redirect users, Googlebot, and other spiders. (In Apache, you can do this with an .htaccess file; in IIS, you can do this through the administrative console.) For more information about 301 HTTP redirects, please see http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2616.txt.
Source: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=34444&query=301+redirect&topic=&type=

From Matt Cutts:
Now let’s talk for a minute about moving from mattcutts.com to someotherdomain.com. All other things being equal, I would recommend to stay with the original domain if possible. But if you need to move, the recommended way to do it is to put a 301 (permanent) redirect on every page on mattcutts.com to point to the corresponding page on someotherdomain.com. If you can map mattcutts.com/url1.html to someotherdomain.com/url1.html, that’s better than doing a redirect just to the root page (that is, from mattcutts.com/url1.html to someotherdomain.com). In the olden days, Googlebot would immediately follow a 301 redirect as soon as it found it. These days, I believe Googlebot sees the 301 and puts the destination url back in the queue, so it gets crawled a little later.
Source: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/moving-to-a-new-web-host/

Nothing new here for me, but at least I was armed with the official word on the matter from Google in case things went South. I could say “hey, we did what Google says to do!”

Here are the steps I took.

We made a new copy of the site, with all of the identical pages, only changing the name of the company, logo, and adding a page about the name change.

The new domain name was pointed to the new copy of the site.

We used Apache’s mod rewrite to 301 redirect the old site to the new. Each page on the old site redirected to the corresponding page on the new site.

We contacted all of the sites that linked to us, asking them to change the links to point to the new site, and we changed the links we had control over ourselves.

We watched the old site fall out of the search results for nearly 30 days and held our breath.

The other guys in the firm were curiously silent about our missing rankings for the whole 30 days, and the one time they mentioned it, I calmly said, “don’t worry, we did everything like Google says to do it, we should be back up in no time.” :)

Apx. 30 days after the switch, we started showing back up in our old positions (yeahhh!!!)

Looking back on it, I learned a few lessons.

I was really worried about duplicate content issues and having both sites live at the same time, so I used robots.txt to exclude Googlebot from the new site until I was ready to do the 301’s. This probably wasn’t a good idea with the way that Google handles duplicate content these days. I think the change would have even gone quicker had I let Google crawl the new site first.

We put out an SEO’d press release about the change. This was a good idea, it got us links and showed transparency in what we were doing.

We paid attention to trust factors with the new domain, we registered it for 10 years, used the same contacts as on the old domain, didn’t hide the registrant information using privacy protection, etc. These were all things that probably helped.

Ever “Googled” yourself? If so, what do the search results show? If you have social media profiles and web pages with your name on them – there’s a good chance these will show up. This is what the concept of reputation management is built around – managing your online reputation. For people who do business on the web, their company name frequently comes up in social media circles….potentially on forums and blog posts, and it has become increasingly difficult for businesses to deal with negative statements about them. Although the best defense in good customer service, we all know you can’t keep everyone happy all the time.

Worst case scenario is having sites like these (click) pop up about your business. Who wants a whole website devoted to attacking their reputation?
:(

Sometimes the best defense is an early one, and here are two simple ways you can monitor your online reputation:

1. Alerts: Google, Yahoo, and MSN all have alert services that will let you know when the top 10 or 20 search results change for a search you choose. Here’s where to set them:
http://www.google.com/alerts
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/alerts/
http://alerts.live.com/Alerts/Default.aspx

2. Search Blogs: Use Technorati.com to monitor the blogosphere by subscribing to RSS feeds of the searches you want to monitor.

Many people are aware that I work for an internet marketing firm called Foreman & Pike Consulting (used to be www.ForemanPike.com). We have now changed our name to Reciprocal Consulting (www.ReciprocalConsulting.com). I am happy to say that we will continue to be able to provide the same top-notch service that we are well known for in the industry. Here is the letter from John Pike on the change:

As the internet advertising market changes each day, so must we.

Foreman & Pike Consulting has always been on the cutting edge of growth, development and performance; and this will not change. We will continue to offer Internet advertising solutions, successful conversions, increased sales and most importantly, a return on your investment — all on a pay for performance basis. However, we benefit from your success as much as you do because after all, without you we would be without purpose.

It is for this reason that Foreman & Pike has changed their name to Reciprocal Consulting.

We believe that Reciprocal better describes who we are, what we do and what we offer, as our relationship with our clients is mutually beneficial. We want to stress, as we always have, that we are Partners with our clients. We take on your vision, make your goals our goals and our success is measured only by your success. This is the difference between an Internet Marketing firm and Reciprocal Consulting.

Nothing has changed and nothing will except for our name, which we feel better represents us and our relationship with you, our clients.

Sincerely,

When I moved almost all of my websites to a dedicated server at LiquidWeb about 4 months ago, I thought I would be getting some peace of mind, but I had no idea about all of the other great things that would result from having a managed, dedicated server of my own.

Here are some of the things I find really advantageous about dedicated servers as opposed to typical shared hosting that I was handcuffed by before.

Incredible Response Times – granted these differences are in milliseconds, but obviously there is a significant difference here. These two charts are my site monitoring results from my dedicated server at LiquidWeb, and my Gridserver (shared hosting) account at Media Temple. If you look at the scale on the left, you will see that the LiquidWeb dedicated server is about twice as fast on average. I should also mention that the Media Temple account has regular unscheduled downtime, still to this day.
LiquidWeb Dedicated Server:

MediaTemple Gridserver:

Great Tech Support – I always get a knowledgeable tech on the phone within a minute or two of calling. I’ve never had to wait on hold for longer than two minutes ~ever~ and in the beginning, I had to call quite a bit. While I don’t have experience with LiquidWeb’s shared hosting, I can honestly say that as a dedicated server customer, you get treated with a lot of respect and get premium service. I never had that feeling in all the years I used shared hosting.

Ability to Customize Server Configurations – One of the most frustating things I had to deal with on shared hosting was the fact that the shared hosting companies had many different restrictions regarding what could be run on their servers, and settings they allowed. Aplus.net was particulary bad about this…I had to submit a support request every time I wanted a site to download an RSS feed from another location, they restricted the number of simultaneous PHP processes, causing all kinds of errors. With my dedicated server, I can change just about any configurable service I want and do some neat things I couldn’t do before like using PHP code in .htm pages.

More Control Over Email Functionality – With shared hosting you get email in a can, but with a dedicated server, you get a first class butler saying, “sir, what outgoing port would you like to use for your pop3 connection?” Many different aspects of email service are configurable through CPanel, much more so than what you’re probably used to with shared hosting.

Ease of Adding / Removing Accounts & Static IP’s – It’s never been easier to add or remove new websites to my account. Who knows how many this server will actually let me add? Another great advantage is that I can get static IP addresses for all of my sites. From an SEO standpoint, static IP’s are a plus, and I had no idea that I could even get static IP’s from different class-C blocks hosted on the same server – another great advantage.

While I was somewhat reluctant about moving my sites over to a dedicated server for quite some time, I can look back with confidence now knowing that it was one of the best decisions I’ve made as a website owner. The price was quite a bit higher than what I was used to paying, but the peace of mind, service, and flexibility all make up for it. The bottom line is that my websites are a significant source of income for me, and what is more important to a website than hosting? When hosting fails, everything fails – your whole business.

If you’re involved in the internet marketing profession, there is eventually going to come a time when you will need a picture of yourself for a bio or “about us” page. Especially if you’re a blogger – a good picture helps readers to connect and get a feel for who you are; Problogger has a good post on the benefits of using your picture on your blog.

My time had come. I needed a picture for our firm’s website. I’ve been getting along with some crappy old pictures that I cropped from random photos for too long. So being the internet marketing hacker I am, I hit Google up for some “New Orleans Photographers,” and that’s how I was lucky enough to find George Long.

I actually requested quotes from quite a few of these gurus, but George was in line with the rest of their prices, and he could see me the fastest. I showed up at 9am this morning, and was amazed by his professionalism and attention to detail. Within an hour we had the perfect picture for Foreman & Pike’s “About Us” page, as well as a few casual shots I got him to do for my blog.

George’s studio is adorned with amazing pictures from his 30 years of photographing New Orleans and Mardi Gras. He’s even got a spectacular book of post-Katrina photos that’s about to be published soon. I highly recommend his work, and I plan on using his services in the future.

Being the webmaster of a site with over 400 direct advertisers (who are therapists), I often get asked about stats, and currently I don’t have anything set up to deliver stats to my directory’s advertisers. The population I advertise for are therapists who, for the most part, are relatively new to internet marketing. Since I also manage a few individual marketing campaigns for therapists, I have a good idea about the kind of traffic that converts into referrals for them, and the kind of traffic that doesn’t. I even get to see how good my site’s competitors do at sending conversions to therapists. It’s a really unique vantage point, and here’s what I’ve come to learn from it.

The truth about what people are selling you in terms of advertising, is that the bottom line is the price you pay for each conversion. In the case of the therapists who advertise on my website, a “conversion” is a referral for counseling services. With that being said, statistics on visitors and pageviews that people send their advertisers can potentially be meaningless due to the fact that conversions are highly dependent on how targeted the traffic is.

Targeting Traffic

Let’s start with the concept of targeting, “How Targeted is the Traffic?” The truth about traffic, is that you can literally buy traffic for a website through a number of sources, but different traffic will convert into a referral at different rates. A case in point was an experiment I did one time when I bought cheap advertising through a lesser known pay-per-click service. I got a lot of “traffic” from the service, people where clicking on my relevant ads and visiting my website, and the cost was less than what you would pay for clicks through Google or Yahoo! Sounds good right?

It wasn’t good at all. The reason being, that the traffic had nearly a 100% “bounce rate;” in other words, those people hit the homepage of my website and left from there. They weren’t at all interested in what my site had to offer. Would you want to advertise with a site that got that kind of traffic? There are a lot of ways that companies can fail to deliver conversions to their advertisers and poor targeting is one. Another common mistake is by not managing pay-per-click campaigns properly.

Case in point: See the attached screenshot for a Google search I did for “massage therapists in New York.”

The circled ad on the right is for a relationship therapist who hasn’t added the negative keyword “massage” to his pay-per-click campaign (which would keep him from showing up for this search). Mistakes such as these are common, and can cost advertisers a lot of money because consumers don’t always realize that the ad isn’t for them until after they click on it.

My purpose in bringing up targeting is to demonstrate that 100 visitors, doesn’t always equal “100 visitors.” I wish I could stop there, but there’s more. Another reason “100 visitors” doesn’t always equal “100 visitors” is that there are different ways of defining a visitor to a website, and the same goes for PageViews! Unfortunately, most stats packages define these concepts in different ways that can result in significant differences amongst the stats they report.

Differences Among Stats Packages

Some of the most common methods website owners use these days to look at their stats are log file analyzers that take raw information from the web server’s logs and translate it into useful tables and charts (like AW Stats and Webalizer), and tracking tools like Google Analytics which use javascript to track your site’s visitors. While all have their advantages and disadvantages, the numbers from each can be very different. Since Google Analytics uses a javascript, only visitors with web browsers that handle javascript will be tracked, so those numbers can be more conservative. On the opposite end of the spectrum, log file analyzers like Webalizer and AW stats, will frequently count bots that are spidering your site for different reasons as “unique visitors,” which can make those statistics grossly exagerated. There are a lot of other stats packages out there, but these free ones are commonly used and sufficient for most websites. The important thing to be aware of though, is that the manner in which a stats package defines a visitor or pageview can vary significantly amongst them.

These differences also hold true for ad serving software. One of the most common tools people use to send stats to their advertisers is an auto-generated report that comes from the software they use to serve ads on their website. A lot of online ad sales are done on a “CPM” or “cost per mil” basis, with a “mil” being 1000 ad impressions. In order to estimate the kind of value you will get from such advertising, one needs to know how that advertiser defines an “impression.” Some ad serving software will show a new impression to a visitor who has been on the same web page for an extended period of time. Typically, this happens when the banner cycles through to another advertiser then back to your banner, but not always. Is that something you want getting counted twice? Do you have a choice? Probably not. What about if the visitor refreshes the web page?

Confused yet? Me too. That’s why I take what people tell me about their website’s stats with a grain of salt when I buy advertising. It’s a trial and error process for me that I have learned to evaluate effectively over time.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is, you need to “level the playing field” by evaluating your own stats. You can easily compare different advertising by looking at the referral stats for your own website. Many therapists I talk to have websites and don’t realize that they already have a stats package installed – that their designer or web host just needs to provide them access to it. Once there, you should be able to look under a “Referring Sites” category to see where your websites visitors are coming from. Compare the amount you spend with how many visitors you get from each advertiser.

Track your conversions as well. For therapists in particular, if you have a “contact form” on your website, you can track conversions by entering a “Goal” (the URL of your “Thank You for Contacting Me” page) into Google Analytics. With this information you should be able to easily see which sites are sending traffic to you that results in a referral. Conversion tracking is an absolute necessity for any serious marketing campaign; it can mean the difference between “making thousands” or “spending thousands.”

But what about phone calls? How can I track those?

First of all, if you have a website for your services, it is important to have your phone number in a prominent place (near the top, and BIG). The easier it is for people to contact you, the more likely your website will be to convert visitors into referrals. Keep a spreadsheet handy to record new referrals you get, and politely ask, “Do you mind me asking how you found out about my services?” If they say “your website,” also ask if they found your site through a search engine or another website. Sometimes people will be able to recall, and the information can be very useful in determining if your advertising dollars are being well spent. This information can also be gathered through new patient intake forms.

The internet is one of the best ways to advertise for many different professions, products, and services. For therapists in particular, the demographics of internet users are perfect for getting quality referrals. Your money can go a lot further on the web than through traditional means such as yellow page or print advertising. With that being said, this form of advertising is relatively new compared to traditional means, so many are not familiar with the concepts involved. Hopefully my explanations will help.
