I have a website with excellent organic search engine rankings for moderately competitive keywords that are well-targeted for a lot of advertisers. I run Adsense on this site, and it has always done well for me. But in the past 6 months or so, Adsense revenues have been declining somewhat, so I decided to take action.

The best performing Adsense ads are usually showing up at the top, so I did some research and found which two had the best paying affiliate programs. One paid around 30% per sale, and the other had a very good per sale payout that wasn’t dependant on the percentage.

For one program, I created a small text ad similar in appearance to the Adsense ads on my site. I placed it in an i-frame and plugged it in, right on top of adsense (pushing down adsense a notch). I also made sure that all of the links on my site for this advertiser used the affiliate code, and I blocked the ads from showing up in Adsense using their competitive URL filter.

For the other program, I felt it would be more suitable to create a landing page on my site for it. I did this, and even did some SEO work on the landing page. I linked to the landing page from a featured links area on my homepage, and from some other prominent places on the site.

The last thing I did, was to run some banners on my site. I already had a cheap banner rotation script installed that I got from SoftBiz Scripts. It’s really simple, and I recommend it for small sites. Although I normally had advertisers running banners there, at the time, I was down to one advertiser. So I added banners for the affiliate programs. I’m not a terrible artist, so I even designed my own banners; and so far they have outperformed the standard banners that the affiliate programs provide.

Although I incorporated these changes over the course of a few months, the total time spent on them was around 8 hrs. I could have easily done it all in one day, but I wanted to test things out a little bit at a time to ensure that I didn’t waste time and money. Hopefully some of you can take advantage of this as well.

Also of note, was the fact that my Adsense earnings did not decline from removing these two advertisers. In fact, they seem to be going up again these past few months.
